The Secret Life of an Ancestor
Jul 16, 2021I read a lot of historical fiction set in Europe World War II. Recently I finished the book, The Paris Apartment, by Kelly Bowen.
In this book, the main character discovers her grandmother had a secret life during World War II in Paris. Something she lived and kept hidden after the war ended. Something too painful to remember. Yet when she died, her granddaughter inherited the apartment and what she discovered the first time she entered was shocking.
I won't ruin the book for you and invite you to read it if you like historical fiction. I particularly like historical fiction because it introduces me to things I might not have known about and gives me a lot of material and questions to look at with my family. Even though it is fiction, you can still learn and grow from reading these books.
In your family research, did you ever find someone whose "story" of who they were ended up being very different from the truth? How did you discover this? What did you do with this knowledge? Did it change your life? Did you share this information with your family? What was their reaction?
Did you ever discover an ancestor had a part of their life they kept hidden? Do you have any World War II ancestors who led a life they kept secret?
What did you discover?
Describe the person you knew.
Describe who else they were after you learned about their secret life.
What did you learn about them? What did you learn about your family? What did you learn about yourself with this new knowledge?
There are so many great historical fiction books available on World War II and other time periods. If you haven't read one in a while, I invite you to do so. Who knows what you will start to question about your own family history.
